This year you can do your festive shopping at aChristmas Market like no other in the world. The pretty Dutch town of Valkenburg is transformed into a "Christmas Town" with the labyrinth of the "Velvet Caves", carved into the rocks below the town's ancient castle, sparkling eith seasonal decorations and lined with wonderful market stalls. Around the town discover a bygone era of medieval life with ancient houses, riverbank water wills & a delightful pedestrianised main square. In the evening watch the town's annual "Christmas Fairytales" parade featuring beatifully lit floats & dancers in breath-taking costumes. We'll also visit the cobbled old town of Maastricht & Vaals, where Holland, Belgium & Germany meet.

Leaving Kingsbridge early morning we travel to Dover & cross the Channel into France arriving at Calais we continue our journey through Belgium to Holland. Arriving at our hotel early evening.D

A free day to enjoy the delights of this Medieval town, Valkenburg is a hidden treasure of Holland. With a ruined castle, anciet houses, water mills dotted along the river & a pedestrianised main square, it is easy to picture a bygone era of Medieval life. Vaulkenburg may not be such a best-kept secret for much longer . Visit some of the following unique Christmas markets (entrance fee applies - approx. 8 Euros) -
One of the most anticipated Christmas events in Holland is the Fluweelengrot (Velvet Cave) Christmas Market. Set within the labyrinth of caves beneath Valkenburg Castle ruins, the market draws on the ancient legendary tales of Valkenburg immersing you in a truly magical atmosphere. You will find many unique local and international handmade products such as nativity scenes, sculptures, Christmas decorations, wreaths, candles and much more - there is an array of edible gifts too! Each year the market has a different theme; in 2010 it was a Charles Dickens Christmas. It would not be a Dutch Christmas Market without the traditional poffertjes (mini pancakes) and famous Dutch pea soup!
The Christmas market Municipal Cave( Gemeentegrot)- located at the foot of the well-known Cauberg - is the largest, oldest and most visited underground Christmas market in Europe. You will be amazed by the beautiful settings and decors, which are in complete harmony with the countless stalls offering Christmas gifts and other luxuries. The spacious, longdrawn-out galleries that characterize this cave invite you to while away the hours against a musical backdrop in a Christmas cave equipped with excellent facilities.
Visit the MergelRijk cave this year to admire hundreds of tiny houses, moving attractions, and thousands of figurines and Christmas trees. The festively lit cave with its enchanting Christmas decorations and stunning marl statues also tells fascinating stories about caves and marl.
Experience the fairytale sand sculptures in Wilhelminagrot where artists from all over the world have built their sand sculptures. Be enchanted by the fairy-tale atmosphere and twinkling atmospheric lights. This fairytale atmosphere continues on the cable car that is illuminated for a romantic trip towards the Brasserie de Wilhelminatoren. Here you can enjoy breathtaking views over Valkenburg.
In the evening watch the annual 'Christmas Fairytales' parade featuring beautifully lit floats and dancers in breath-taking costumes. During the winter months, the parade will make two appearances in the centre of Valkenburg. You can enjoy the entire 25-minute parade from the same spot.
Route D'Amuse. A culinairy walking tour, every day between noon and 6pm , choose from three different routes, each visiting five restaurants, www.route-damuse.nl for any questions. The cost is approx € 13 including five Amuse-Bites. The route descriptions are in Dutch.
Santa's Village An atmospheric Christmas market in the heart of Valkenburg for the whole family. A morning trip to Vaals, to view the meeting point of three countries, Germany, Belgium and Holland, then the afternoon we return to Valkenbugh to enjoy the Christmas atmosphere.D, CB
